The following story was linked to CNN website today. A little girl was denied health insurance because she was underweight. Basically, the insurance company has some specific criteria that every insured person must meet, including being within certain height/weight ratios. I'm guessing this is because people who deviate from those ratios would be more likely to have health issues and are more expensive to cover. Nothing new there, insurance companies suck, etc. What I found most unexpected/annoying/startling were some quotes from the parents of the girl:

From the father:
"We would definitely like to see insurance reform. We are not proponents of universal health care by any means, but what we want to see is that insurance companies have legitimate reasons for denying coverage."

Hmm, what are "legitimate reasons", I wonder? Oh, I know - ones that don't exclude them! Ah, that makes sense.

From the mother:
"You’d never think that something like size, something that seems so irrelevant to your health, would be a discriminating factor,"

I've been thinking hard how to characterize this statement tactfully and non-judgementally. I failed so I'll just call it stupid.

The bright side of me being sick right now is that I am the last one in our family to get this cold. That means that I don't have to worry about giving it to anyone else. Usually, if I catch a bug at work, there are all these annoying precautions that I try to take at home, which never work anyway because I don't have the discipline to follow them through. But not now! Everyone else has been sick over the last week, so I can share my cereal with the kids and let Emma drink from my cup. Yay!

Everybody, check this out. Someone scanned a children's book on gender roles from 1950s (?) and posted it on her blog. It's hysterical.

I take a bus from work and often see a middle aged, blue collar type guy get on the same bus at my stop. He almost always carries a medium size cooler, the type you would take to a picnic. I have no idea what he has in there. Maybe that's how he packs his lunch, maybe it's something work-related. But every time I see him and his cooler, I think "Ah, there's the guy and his kidney."
